Dendrobium, a genus of orchids, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Shihu." Traditionally, Dendrobium species have been used as tonics for promoting general health, nourishing yin, and supporting various organ systems, including the kidneys and stomach. In TCM theory, the adrenal glands are not specifically mentioned, but the kidneys are considered closely related to adrenal function, as both are involved in energy and vitality. This has led to the modern interpretation and marketing of Dendrobium as supporting adrenal health, although this is an extrapolation from its traditional use for "kidney yin deficiency."
There is little to no direct scientific evidence supporting Dendrobium's role in supporting adrenal gland function in the Western physiological sense. Most research on Dendrobium has focused on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, but not specifically on adrenal hormones or stress response. The traditional use is well-documented in herbal literature, but this does not equate to clinical validation for adrenal support as understood in modern medicine. Therefore, while Dendrobium is traditionally regarded as a tonic with possible indirect benefits, strong evidence for its use in supporting the adrenal glands specifically is lacking.
