Bupleurum is a genus of plants commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, most notably in formulas like Xiao Chai Hu Tang ("Minor Bupleurum Decoction"). Its use as an "adrenal support" herb is largely rooted in traditional herbalism rather than modern scientific research. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Bupleurum is believed to help with "Liver Qi stagnation," and is used to support the body's response to stress, promote emotional balance, and harmonize bodily systems. This has led to its reputation in Western herbal practice as an "adaptogen," a class of herbs thought to help the body resist physical, chemical, or biological stressors.

However, the "adrenal glands" as understood in Western physiology are not a focus in TCM, and there are no classical references to Bupleurum specifically supporting adrenal glands. Some modern herbalists extrapolate Bupleurum’s historical use for stress-related conditions to theorize a benefit for adrenal health, but this is not validated by robust scientific evidence. There are some laboratory and animal studies exploring Bupleurum’s anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) effects, but few, if any, quality human clinical trials directly linking Bupleurum with adrenal function or adrenal health. Therefore, its use for adrenal support is justified mainly by traditional use and extrapolation, not by direct scientific validation.
