Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Black seed (Nigella sativa) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine, such as Unani, Ayurveda, and various Middle Eastern herbal practices. It has been revered as a general health tonic, often described as supporting vitality, energy, and resilience—qualities sometimes associated with the function of the adrenal glands in modern wellness paradigms. However, the explicit use of black seed specifically for “adrenal gland support” is not strongly documented in traditional texts. Instead, its traditional uses have included support for digestion, respiratory health, and immune modulation. The connection to adrenal health is more recent and seems to be inferred from its general adaptogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientifically, some animal studies suggest black seed and its active component thymoquinone may help modulate the body’s stress response and offer some protection against oxidative stress, which could theoretically benefit adrenal function. However, there are currently no robust clinical trials specifically examining black seed’s effects on adrenal health in humans. Therefore, while its use for adrenal support is informed by broader traditional uses for energy and vitality, the evidence for this specific application is moderate and primarily traditional rather than scientific.
