For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) is a plant traditionally used in Japanese and East Asian herbal medicine. While it is widely recognized for its general tonic properties and its use in promoting longevity and vitality, there is limited specific traditional documentation for its role in supporting the adrenal glands directly. However, some traditional herbalists and contemporary natural health practitioners suggest ashitaba may benefit the adrenal system due to its adaptogenic-like qualities, meaning it may help the body adapt to stress—an important function of adrenal glands. The plant contains chalcones, antioxidants, and various phytochemicals that have been studied for their health-promoting effects, particularly in relation to inflammation, metabolism, and cellular health. However, rigorous scientific studies specifically investigating ashitaba’s direct effects on adrenal gland function or on adrenal hormones (such as cortisol) are lacking. Most evidence for its adrenal support is anecdotal or based on broader interpretations of its adaptogenic and stress-modulating properties in traditional systems. As a result, while there is some traditional basis for its use in supporting overall vitality and stress adaptation, the evidence for direct adrenal support is weak and not well-established in either traditional literature or modern scientific research.
