Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Glandular extracts, often termed "gland (mixed)" supplements, refer to dietary supplements containing powdered animal glands such as adrenal, thyroid, pituitary, and others. The use of glandulars to support or treat conditions like "adrenal fatigue" is rooted primarily in traditional naturopathic and alternative medicine practices, not in scientific validation. Historically, proponents have argued that ingesting animal glands can support the corresponding human organ, a concept sometimes referred to as "like supports like." The concept of "adrenal fatigue" itself is controversial and is not widely recognized by conventional medicine or supported by robust scientific evidence.

Some anecdotal reports and case studies suggest that glandular supplements may help with symptoms attributed to adrenal dysfunction, such as fatigue or stress intolerance, but there are no large, well-controlled clinical trials confirming their safety or efficacy for this purpose. Furthermore, major medical associations have issued statements cautioning against the diagnosis and treatment of "adrenal fatigue," as it lacks scientific basis. The evidence supporting the use of mixed glandular extracts for adrenal fatigue is therefore very limited, mostly traditional, and largely unsupported by rigorous research.

In summary, while glandular extracts have a long history in alternative and naturopathic medicine, there is little scientific evidence justifying their use for "adrenal fatigue," and the condition itself remains scientifically unsubstantiated.
