For the body system: Adrenal Cortex
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Triterpenes are a large and diverse class of naturally occurring compounds found in many plants, such as licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), ginseng, and some medicinal mushrooms. Their use to support the adrenal cortex is rooted primarily in traditional herbal medicine rather than robust scientific evidence. Historically, herbs rich in triterpenes—particularly licorice—have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda to address symptoms associated with adrenal insufficiency, fatigue, and stress. This is largely based on observations of increased vitality and endurance in users of these herbs, which were often linked to adrenal health.
Scientific studies on individual triterpenes (e.g., glycyrrhizin from licorice) suggest some effects on cortisol metabolism by inhibiting the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, potentially leading to higher cortisol levels. However, these effects have not been directly linked to broad support or restoration of adrenal cortex function, and concerns about side effects (such as hypertension and fluid retention) exist. There are few, if any, rigorous clinical trials investigating triterpenes as a class for adrenal support. Thus, while triterpene-rich herbs have a long tradition of use for adrenal-related complaints, scientific validation is limited and more research is needed.
