Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Schisandrins, the active lignan components of Schisandra chinensis, are traditionally used in Chinese medicine as adaptogens—substances believed to help the body resist stressors of all kinds, including those affecting the adrenal cortex. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Schisandra is thought to “tonify the kidney and heart Qi,” which is loosely associated with supporting adrenal function and energy. While some laboratory and animal studies suggest Schisandrins may influence stress response mechanisms—such as modulating cortisol levels or affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis—robust clinical trials in humans to directly support adrenal cortex health are lacking. Most evidence comes from historical use and animal models, not from modern, well-controlled human studies. Therefore, the use of Schisandrins for adrenal cortex support is primarily justified by tradition, with only preliminary scientific indications. Further research is necessary to establish efficacy and clarify mechanisms in humans.
