Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea salt has traditionally been used in various cultures for its mineral content and perceived health benefits, including support for the adrenal cortex. In traditional naturopathic and folk medicine, salt is believed to help maintain electrolyte balance and support adrenal function, especially during periods of stress or fatigue. This belief is partly based on the role of sodium in fluid balance and blood pressure regulation, both of which are influenced by adrenal hormones such as aldosterone.

However, scientific evidence directly linking sea salt consumption to improved adrenal cortex function is limited. Most of the information supporting its use is anecdotal or based on general knowledge of sodium’s physiological roles. In cases of adrenal insufficiency (such as Addison’s disease), increased salt intake is sometimes medically recommended due to the body's impaired ability to retain sodium, but this is a specific clinical scenario rather than a general recommendation for adrenal support. Sea salt, specifically, does not offer unique benefits over other dietary sources of sodium for the adrenal cortex.

In summary, while the use of sea salt for adrenal support is rooted in tradition and has some physiological plausibility, strong scientific validation for its benefit in supporting adrenal health in the general population is lacking.
