Salidrosides are phenolic compounds found primarily in Rhodiola rosea, an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in various systems of medicine. Scientific interest in salidrosides largely centers on their potential to mitigate the effects of physical and mental stress, which has led to their association with support for the adrenal cortex—a key player in the body’s stress response through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Several animal studies and a limited number of human trials suggest that salidrosides may modulate the release of stress hormones like cortisol, improve stress resilience, and reduce fatigue. For example, some studies demonstrate that Rhodiola extracts standardized to salidroside content can blunt excessive cortisol elevation during stress, which theoretically supports adrenal balance. However, while these findings are promising, the body of evidence is not extensive, and much of it is based on whole plant extracts rather than isolated salidroside. There is still a need for larger, well-controlled human clinical trials to confirm these effects and to clarify the specific role of salidroside versus other constituents. Therefore, while there is some scientific validation for the use of salidrosides in supporting the adrenal cortex and the body's stress response, the evidence is moderate rather than strong.
