Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Panax Notoginseng, also known as "San Qi," is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its purported ability to promote blood circulation, stop bleeding, and reduce inflammation. Within TCM, Panax Notoginseng is sometimes referenced in formulas intended to address symptoms believed to be related to "deficiency" or "fatigue," which may loosely correlate to what Western herbalists refer to as "adrenal support." However, in traditional texts, its direct role in supporting the adrenal cortex as understood in modern physiology is not specifically described. Instead, its use for "vital energy" or "qi" might be interpreted by some as indirectly supporting adrenal function due to overlap in the concepts of stress and fatigue. Scientifically, there is limited direct evidence connecting Panax Notoginseng to adrenal cortex support. Most modern research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and cardiovascular effects rather than endocrine or adrenal-specific actions. There are some animal studies investigating adaptogenic effects of Panax species, but these are mostly on Panax ginseng or Panax quinquefolius, not specifically Panax Notoginseng. Thus, the use of Panax Notoginseng for adrenal cortex support is justified mainly by tradition, with only tangential scientific evidence that does not directly validate this use.
