Evidence supporting the use of: Oriental Ginseng
For the body system: Adrenal Cortex
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Oriental Ginseng (commonly referring to Panax ginseng) has a long-standing history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, particularly as an adaptogen to help the body resist stress and support overall vitality. In traditional systems, ginseng is believed to replenish "qi" (vital energy) and strengthen the body's ability to cope with physical and mental stressors, functions that conceptually align with modern understandings of the adrenal cortex and its role in stress response. However, while there is some scientific research indicating that Panax ginseng may help modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and improve stress resilience, direct and robust clinical evidence specifically linking Oriental Ginseng to targeted support of the adrenal cortex in humans is limited. Most of the available studies are preclinical or involve general adaptogenic effects rather than focused adrenal support. Thus, while its use for adrenal health is justified by tradition and partially supported by early scientific findings regarding stress adaptation, it does not yet have strong or conclusive clinical validation for this specific purpose.
