Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Maral Root (Rhaponticum carthamoides) has a history of traditional use in Russian and Eastern European herbal medicine, primarily as an adaptogen to support physical endurance, recovery, and vitality. Its use in supporting the adrenal cortex body system is based largely on these adaptogenic properties, as adaptogens are believed to help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stressors—functions closely tied to adrenal health. While Maral Root contains compounds such as ecdysteroids (notably 20-hydroxyecdysone), which have shown some anabolic and anti-fatigue effects in animal and limited human studies, direct scientific evidence linking Maral Root to specific support of adrenal cortex function is lacking.

Most references to its adrenal support roles derive from traditional herbal literature and the general adaptogen framework rather than controlled clinical studies. There are few, if any, peer-reviewed studies that directly investigate Maral Root's effects on adrenal hormones such as cortisol or on adrenal gland histology or function in humans. Thus, while Maral Root is traditionally used as an adaptogen that may indirectly support stress response and, by extension, the adrenal cortex, the strength of evidence for this specific application remains weak, warranting a low rating.
