Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginsenosides are active compounds found in ginseng (Panax ginseng), a plant with a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. Traditionally, ginseng has been used as an adaptogen—an agent believed to help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stressors, including those affecting the adrenal cortex, which is involved in the body’s stress response via hormone production (e.g., cortisol). Historical texts and ethnobotanical records describe the use of ginseng for fatigue, stress, and vitality, frequently associating its use with support for the body's stress-handling systems.

Modern scientific studies do suggest that ginsenosides can modulate stress responses in animals and humans, potentially influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. However, direct evidence specifically linking ginsenosides to adrenal cortex support in humans is limited and largely preliminary. Most research focuses on broader adaptogenic or anti-fatigue effects, with few high-quality clinical trials directly assessing adrenal hormone production or function. Thus, while traditional use is strong and some mechanistic animal and in vitro studies exist, robust human clinical validation for adrenal cortex support is lacking, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
