Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bulbine natalensis is a succulent plant native to South Africa, traditionally used in local herbal medicine. While much of the attention around Bulbine natalensis in recent years focuses on its purported effects on testosterone and libido, there is some traditional use suggesting general support for vitality and stress, which might loosely connect to the adrenal cortex’s role in stress response. However, there is no direct historical or ethnobotanical record specifically linking Bulbine natalensis to adrenal cortex support. Scientifically, research on Bulbine natalensis has largely focused on its androgenic and possible aphrodisiac effects, with some studies in rodents demonstrating increased testosterone levels and associated anabolic effects. There is minimal scientific exploration regarding its impact on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, cortisol, or direct adrenal cortex function. As of now, no published clinical trials support the use of Bulbine natalensis for adrenal health. In summary, its use for adrenal cortex support is primarily based on traditional, broad claims about vitality, rather than direct or validated effects on adrenal physiology. The evidence base is weak, and further research would be needed to substantiate any such claims.
