Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Herbal and botanical blends are often used in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Western herbalism, to support the adrenal cortex and help the body cope with stress. Common herbs found in such blends include Withania somnifera (ashwagandha), Rhodiola rosea, Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian ginseng), and Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice root). These herbs are frequently categorized as "adaptogens," plants believed to help the body adapt to stress and maintain homeostasis. Historically, traditional practitioners have used these botanicals to address symptoms thought to be related to "adrenal fatigue," such as fatigue, low energy, and stress intolerance.

Scientific validation for these uses varies by herb and is generally limited. Some small clinical trials and animal studies suggest that certain adaptogens may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and modulate stress responses. However, direct evidence for improvement of adrenal cortex function in humans is sparse, and the concept of "adrenal fatigue" is not recognized in conventional medicine. Most research is preliminary, and robust, well-controlled human studies are lacking. Therefore, while the tradition of using herbal blends for adrenal support is well-established, the scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness for this specific body system remains limited.
