Sargentodoxa cuneata, known as "Da Xue Teng" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has historically been used to treat a variety of inflammatory and infectious conditions, including adenitis (inflammation of the lymph glands). In TCM, Sargentodoxa is believed to "clear heat and toxins," "invigorate blood," and "reduce swelling," making it a common ingredient in herbal formulas prescribed for abscesses, sores, and swollen lymph nodes. Classical texts and modern TCM formularies frequently recommend Sargentodoxa in cases of lymphadenitis, boils, or other suppurative disorders, often in combination with other herbs such as Smilax glabra and Lonicera japonica. From a scientific perspective, there is limited but emerging research indicating that extracts of Sargentodoxa cuneata possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties. Some studies have demonstrated inhibition of inflammatory cytokines and modest antibacterial activity in vitro. However, there are no high-quality clinical trials specifically examining its efficacy in treating adenitis or lymphadenitis in humans. Most of the evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal. Thus, while its use is deeply rooted in traditional practice and supported by historical documentation, scientific validation for the treatment of adenitis is currently insufficient.
