Evidence supporting the use of: Panax Notoginseng
For the health condition: Adenitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Panax Notoginseng, known as Sanqi or Tianqi in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for conditions involving inflammation and swelling, such as adenitis (inflammation of lymph nodes). In TCM, it is believed to promote blood circulation, reduce swelling, and alleviate pain. Classical texts and modern TCM practitioners have historically recommended Panax Notoginseng for "detoxifying" the body and resolving phlegm, which are concepts loosely associated with infections and lymphadenitis in Western medicine. However, the evidence supporting its use for adenitis is primarily anecdotal and based on traditional practice rather than rigorous clinical research. Few modern studies have specifically investigated the effects of Panax Notoginseng on adenitis in humans. Some experimental and animal studies suggest that its saponins possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically support its traditional use for inflammatory conditions. Yet, these findings do not directly confirm efficacy for adenitis in clinical settings. Therefore, while Panax Notoginseng is traditionally used for conditions that may include adenitis, high-quality scientific validation for its effectiveness in this specific condition is lacking, and its use is justified mainly by longstanding traditional use rather than robust scientific evidence.
