Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Omega-3 fatty acids have been investigated for their potential role in supporting the treatment of addictions, including tobacco smoking and chewing. The primary rationale is based on their well-established effects on brain health, neuronal plasticity, and neurotransmitter regulation, particularly dopamine and serotonin pathways, which are implicated in addiction. Several small-scale studies and pilot trials have explored the relationship between omega-3 supplementation and addiction behaviors. For example, a few human trials have shown that omega-3 supplementation may help reduce nicotine craving and improve abstinence rates in people attempting to quit smoking. One randomized controlled trial published in Journal of Psychopharmacology (2014) reported that participants receiving omega-3 supplements had significantly reduced cigarette cravings compared to placebo.

The evidence, however, is still limited and preliminary. Most studies have small sample sizes, short durations, or lack replication. There is also a lack of large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically targeting tobacco addiction. No major clinical guidelines currently recommend omega-3 fatty acids as a primary treatment for tobacco addiction, but the biological plausibility and early findings provide a rationale for further research. There is no strong tradition of using omega-3s for addiction in folk or alternative medicine.

In summary, scientific interest exists and some initial evidence suggests potential benefit, but the overall quality and quantity of evidence are currently low, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
