Evidence supporting the use of: Omega-3 fatty acids
For the health condition: Addictions (general remedies for)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Omega-3 fatty acids have been explored as adjunctive treatments for various addictions, particularly substance use disorders such as alcohol, nicotine, and even opioid dependence. The rationale is based on their anti-inflammatory properties, neuroprotective effects, and role in modulating neurotransmitter systems, especially dopamine and serotonin, which are implicated in addiction pathways. Several preclinical studies and a handful of small clinical trials suggest omega-3 supplementation may help reduce cravings, improve mood, and support cognitive function in people with substance use disorders. For example, a 2011 pilot study published in Nature reported reduced anger and anxiety in substance abusers given omega-3s. Another small randomized controlled trial in 2017 found some benefit of omega-3 supplementation in reducing tobacco cravings and improving abstinence rates. However, most available studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and varying dosing regimens. While animal research is promising, robust human clinical evidence is still lacking, and no major guidelines recommend omega-3s as a primary treatment for addiction. Thus, while there is some scientific basis and preliminary evidence for the supportive use of omega-3 fatty acids in addiction, this is best viewed as an adjunct to established therapies, and more high-quality research is needed to confirm efficacy.
