Evidence supporting the use of: Licorice
For the health condition: Addictions (general remedies for)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for a variety of ailments. In the context of addiction, licorice is sometimes included in herbal formulas intended to support detoxification or ease withdrawal symptoms, particularly in TCM, where it is thought to harmonize the effects of other herbs and provide general tonic effects. However, this use is based primarily on traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific evidence. Modern clinical research specifically investigating licorice's efficacy in treating or supporting addiction recovery is very limited. Some preliminary animal studies suggest licorice may have neuroprotective or anti-anxiety effects, which have been hypothesized to be potentially useful in managing addiction, but these findings have not been well translated to human clinical trials or specifically to addiction treatment. Overall, licorice's use for addiction is rooted in tradition, and current scientific evidence does not strongly support its effectiveness for this purpose.
