Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been studied for their potential benefits in treating or supporting recovery from substance use disorders, including alcohol, cocaine, and opioid addiction. The justification for their use is primarily based on emerging scientific research rather than traditional medicine. Preclinical studies and some small-scale human trials suggest that omega-3 supplementation may help modulate neuroinflammation, restore membrane fluidity, and improve neurotransmitter systems (such as dopamine and serotonin) that are disrupted by chronic drug use. Deficiencies in omega-3s have been observed in individuals with substance use disorders, and supplementation has been associated with improved mood, reduced cravings, and better cognitive function in some studies.

However, the quality and size of the studies to date are limited. Most evidence comes from animal models or small pilot studies rather than large, well-controlled clinical trials. For example, a 2011 animal study showed that omega-3 supplementation reduced relapse-like behavior in rats exposed to cocaine. Some human studies have found improvements in impulsivity and depressive symptoms among substance users who received omega-3s, but effects on actual substance use or relapse rates are inconsistent. As a result, omega-3s are not considered a primary or standalone treatment for addiction, but there is some scientific rationale for their supportive use, especially given their favorable safety profile.
