Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Trametes, particularly Trametes versicolor (commonly known as Turkey Tail), has been investigated for its potential immunomodulatory effects, particularly due to its polysaccharide fractions such as polysaccharide-K (PSK) and polysaccharopeptide (PSP). These compounds have demonstrated immune-enhancing properties in vitro and in animal models. In the context of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), several studies—primarily from China and Japan—have explored the adjunctive use of Trametes-derived extracts to support immune function in HIV-positive individuals.

Some clinical research and case reports suggest that PSP may help enhance immune parameters, such as increasing CD4+ T-cell counts, and may reduce the frequency of opportunistic infections when used alongside standard antiretroviral therapy. However, the quality and quantity of randomized controlled trials are limited, and most available data are from small sample sizes or studies with methodological limitations.

While Trametes products have a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine for general immune support, their specific use for AIDS is primarily based on modern scientific exploration of immunomodulatory effects. Currently, evidence is preliminary and insufficient to recommend Trametes as a standard therapy for AIDS, but its use as a complementary approach is supported by some scientific rationale and early clinical findings.
