Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mushrooms, particularly species such as Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), Shiitake (Lentinula edodes), and Maitake (Grifola frondosa), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in East Asia, to support the immune system. In the context of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), some traditional practitioners have employed mushroom extracts or preparations with the intention of enhancing immune function, increasing vitality, and improving quality of life. The bioactive polysaccharides (notably beta-glucans) found in these mushrooms are believed to modulate immune responses.

However, scientific studies specifically investigating the efficacy of mushrooms in treating or supporting AIDS are limited and generally of low quality. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that mushroom extracts can stimulate certain immune parameters, but clinical trials in HIV/AIDS patients are scarce, small in scale, or inconclusive. The available evidence does not support mushrooms as a primary or adjunct treatment for AIDS, but some studies suggest possible benefits for general immune support or mitigation of side effects from antiretroviral therapy. Therefore, while mushrooms are used traditionally for immune support, robust scientific validation for their use specifically in AIDS is lacking, justifying a low evidence rating.
