Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as reishi, is a medicinal mushroom widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for its reputed immune-boosting and health-promoting properties. Its application in supporting individuals with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is rooted primarily in traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. Lingzhi has been used historically to “strengthen qi” and improve vitality, which TCM practitioners interpret as enhancing immune function. This rationale led to its inclusion as a supportive therapy for immune-compromised conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, particularly in Asian countries. Some preclinical studies and small clinical trials suggest that lingzhi extracts may modulate immune responses, increase the activity of certain white blood cells, and possess antiviral properties. However, there is a lack of large-scale, rigorous clinical trials demonstrating clear efficacy in treating or significantly supporting people with AIDS. The majority of existing evidence is anecdotal or based on small, uncontrolled studies. Therefore, while lingzhi continues to be used as a complementary therapy by some, its use for AIDS is best understood as traditional, with only weak scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for this specific condition.
