Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Almond mushroom (Agaricus subrufescens, also known as Agaricus blazei Murill) has a history of use in traditional medicine, especially in Brazil and Japan, for supporting general health and immune function. Its use in the context of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is primarily based on traditional and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific validation. Traditional healers and some alternative medicine practitioners have recommended almond mushroom for immune support, which has led to its application in HIV/AIDS as a means to potentially bolster immune responses. However, while some preliminary laboratory and animal studies suggest that polysaccharides and beta-glucans in almond mushroom may modulate immune activity, clinical evidence in humans—especially in those with HIV/AIDS—is very limited and not conclusive. No large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials have established its effectiveness or safety for treating or supporting AIDS patients. Therefore, while its use is rooted in traditional practices and supported by some early-stage research, the strength of evidence for its efficacy in this specific condition is weak.
