Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tree Turmeric (Berberis aristata), also known as Indian Barberry, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for treating skin conditions, including acne. The key bioactive compound in Tree Turmeric is berberine, which is known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditional practitioners have applied pastes or extracts of the plant to the skin to reduce inflammation, redness, and infection associated with acne. While in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that berberine can inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) and reduce inflammation, direct clinical evidence in humans specifically linking Tree Turmeric or its extracts to improved acne symptoms is limited. Most support for its use in acne comes from anecdotal reports, traditional texts, and extrapolation from laboratory data. There are a few small studies investigating topical berberine-containing formulations for general skin health, but robust, large-scale clinical trials for acne are lacking. As such, Tree Turmeric’s use for acne is justified mainly by tradition, with some weak scientific rationale but insufficient direct evidence to strongly recommend it.
