Evidence supporting the use of: Hemp oil
For the health condition: Acne
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hemp oil, also known as hemp seed oil, has gained attention for its potential role in supporting acne-prone skin. The scientific evidence supporting its use is limited but promising. Hemp oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). Studies have shown that individuals with acne often have lower levels of linoleic acid in their skin surface lipids, leading to thicker sebum and clogged pores. Topical application of oils high in linoleic acid, such as hemp oil, may help restore balance, reduce skin inflammation, and promote a healthier skin barrier.
In addition, hemp oil possesses anti-inflammatory properties due to its fatty acid composition and may help calm irritated or inflamed skin associated with acne. Some in vitro studies and small clinical trials suggest that hemp oil can reduce redness and skin irritation, although robust, large-scale human studies are lacking. Notably, hemp oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores, making it a suitable moisturizing option for acne-prone skin.
While there is some scientific rationale and early evidence supporting the topical use of hemp oil for acne, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is modest. More clinical trials are needed to establish its effectiveness and optimal use. As of now, hemp oil may be considered as a complementary approach to conventional acne treatments, especially for those seeking natural skincare alternatives.
