Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aloe vera has been traditionally used for various skin conditions, including acne, but there is also some scientific evidence supporting its use for acne management. Several studies indicate that Aloe vera gel possesses anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, which are relevant to acne treatment. For example, a double-blind randomized controlled trial found that the combination of Aloe vera gel and tretinoin cream was more effective in reducing acne lesions compared to tretinoin alone (Ferdowsian et al., 2014). Aloe vera contains compounds like aloin, aloemannan, and polysaccharides, which have been shown to reduce inflammation and inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, including Propionibacterium acnes, a bacterium implicated in acne pathogenesis.

However, while these findings are promising, most studies are small or use Aloe vera in combination with standard therapies rather than as a sole treatment. The overall quality of evidence remains limited, and more large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and determine optimal formulations and dosages. In summary, the use of Aloe vera for acne is supported by some scientific evidence, but it is not yet considered a standalone or primary treatment based on current data.
