Silver, particularly in the form of silver sulfadiazine and silver nitrate, has been used in modern medicine for its antimicrobial properties. Silver compounds are commonly applied topically to treat and prevent infections in wounds, burns, and ulcers, and there is some evidence supporting their use in managing abscesses, especially when there is a risk of secondary bacterial infection. The antimicrobial action of silver disrupts bacterial cell membranes and interferes with their metabolic processes, which can help reduce infection at the site of an abscess. However, the primary management of abscesses remains incision and drainage, with systemic or topical antibiotics as indicated. Silver-based dressings may be used as adjuncts for wound care after abscess drainage, helping to prevent reinfection during healing. Evidence for silver’s efficacy in this context is moderate, with some clinical studies and reviews supporting use in wound management, but large-scale randomized controlled trials specifically for abscesses are lacking. It is not a primary therapy for abscesses, and there are concerns about cytotoxicity and delayed healing with prolonged use.
