Hydrogen peroxide has historically been used as a topical antiseptic in the management of wounds and abscesses, primarily due to its ability to release oxygen and produce bubbling that helps mechanically debride tissue. The bubbling effect can dislodge debris and pus, which was traditionally thought to aid in the cleaning of abscess cavities. However, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for the treatment of abscesses is weak. Modern clinical guidelines generally recommend against its use for deep or large abscesses because hydrogen peroxide can be cytotoxic to healthy tissues, delay wound healing, and may worsen tissue injury. Instead, incision and drainage remain the standard of care for abscesses, sometimes accompanied by appropriate antibiotics.
Some older studies and anecdotal reports describe its use for minor wounds or superficial abscesses, but there is little high-quality, controlled data validating its benefit over other methods. Overall, the use of hydrogen peroxide for abscesses persists more from tradition and availability than from strong scientific validation. Current wound care literature generally suggests caution with its use, especially in deep or complex wounds, due to potential harm and lack of substantial benefit.
