Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Shen-chu (also spelled Shenqu or 神麴) is a traditional Chinese medicinal fermentation product composed of wheat flour and various herbs, historically used as a digestive aid. Its use in treating abrasions is not widely documented in modern scientific literature. However, in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Shen-chu is sometimes incorporated into topical formulas for skin healing, partly due to its mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to its fermentation process and herbal constituents.

Historical TCM texts suggest that Shen-chu may promote circulation and "resolve toxins," concepts that can be extended metaphorically to wound healing processes. Some compendiums and folk remedies include it in poultices for minor skin injuries, including abrasions, to prevent infection and facilitate tissue repair. The evidence for these applications is largely anecdotal or based on traditional doctrine rather than empirical clinical trials.

Modern scientific studies directly evaluating Shen-chu for abrasions are lacking. The rating of 2 reflects that, while there is a consistent tradition of use for general skin complaints and indirect theoretical support (such as antimicrobial activity from fermentation products), rigorous scientific validation is absent. If considering its use, it should be as a complementary approach and not a substitute for evidence-based wound care.
