Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ilex asprella, commonly known as "Gang Mei" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is primarily used based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM, Ilex asprella roots are valued for their purported abilities to "clear heat," "eliminate toxins," and "reduce swelling," which justifies their inclusion in treatments for skin conditions such as abrasions, boils, and sores. Historical materia medica texts and contemporary TCM pharmacopeias describe its application—typically as a decoction or wash—to promote healing of minor skin injuries and reduce inflammation.

However, scientific studies specifically investigating the efficacy of Ilex asprella for abrasions are limited. Some research has identified saponins and other phytochemicals in the plant with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which could theoretically aid wound healing, but these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to clinical outcomes for abrasions. Thus, while its use for abrasions is well established in traditional practice, modern pharmacological validation is lacking, and evidence supporting its effectiveness is low to moderate.
