Isomaltulose is a disaccharide carbohydrate that is sometimes used as a sugar substitute in foods and beverages. Its potential role in weight loss is based on its unique metabolic properties compared to sucrose. Isomaltulose is digested and absorbed more slowly than sucrose, leading to a lower glycemic and insulinemic response. Several small clinical studies have investigated whether replacing sucrose with isomaltulose might support weight management by promoting greater fat oxidation and improved glycemic control. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Nutrition Journal (2012) found that isomaltulose increased fat oxidation during physical activity in overweight individuals compared to sucrose. Another study in Obesity Facts (2014) reported modest improvements in body composition when isomaltulose was substituted for sucrose over a 12-week period. However, these effects were small, and most studies are of short duration and limited sample size. There is insufficient evidence to conclude that isomaltulose alone leads to significant weight loss, but its use as a lower-glycemic sugar substitute may have modest benefits as part of an overall calorie-controlled diet. Overall, the evidence is preliminary, and more high-quality, long-term studies are required to support its role in weight loss.
