Evidence supporting the use of: 8-Prenylnaringenin
For the health condition: Vaginal Dryness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
8-Prenylnaringenin is a potent phytoestrogen found primarily in hops (Humulus lupulus). Its use for vaginal dryness is primarily based on its estrogenic properties, which have been demonstrated in laboratory and animal studies. Several preclinical studies have shown that 8-prenylnaringenin binds to estrogen receptors and can mimic some effects of estradiol, the main endogenous estrogen. This has led to its inclusion in some botanical supplements aimed at alleviating menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness.
However, direct clinical evidence in humans specifically addressing the efficacy of 8-prenylnaringenin for vaginal dryness is limited. A few small clinical trials have evaluated hop extracts (which contain 8-prenylnaringenin) for menopausal symptoms broadly, and some reported improvements in overall quality of life and symptom relief, but very few directly assessed vaginal dryness as a primary endpoint. The best available data suggest a possible benefit via estrogenic mechanisms, but definitive, high-quality human studies are lacking.
In summary, while there is a scientific rationale—based on its action as a phytoestrogen—for the use of 8-prenylnaringenin for vaginal dryness, the supporting clinical evidence remains limited and indirect, warranting a moderate evidence score.
