Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Damask rose (Rosa damascena) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially within Persian, Ayurveda, and Unani systems. Its petals and essential oil have been employed for various women's health concerns, including supporting vaginal health. Traditionally, Damask rose has been valued for its purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and soothing properties. Applications have included using rose water or infusions for vaginal rinses, as well as incorporating rose extracts in topical preparations for feminine hygiene.

However, scientific evidence supporting these traditional uses is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Damask rose extracts possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, but direct clinical studies on its efficacy for vaginal health or specific gynecological conditions are lacking. Most available research focuses on general antimicrobial activity, mood enhancement, or skin care benefits. Use in the context of vaginal health remains primarily based on historical precedent and anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical validation. As such, Damask rose remains a popular traditional remedy, but more rigorous clinical research is needed to substantiate its role in supporting the vaginal body system.
