Evidence supporting the use of: Calendula
For the body system: Vagina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Calendula (Calendula officinalis), commonly known as marigold, has a long history of traditional use for supporting vaginal health, particularly in the form of topical applications such as creams, ointments, and vaginal suppositories. Traditional herbal medicine systems in Europe and elsewhere have used calendula extracts to soothe inflammation, promote wound healing, and manage symptoms of vaginal irritation, minor infections, and dryness. The rationale for these uses stems from calendula’s well-documented anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties observed in vitro and in animal studies.
However, scientific validation specifically for calendula’s effects on the vaginal body system is limited. A few small clinical studies and case reports suggest calendula-based products may help with symptoms of vaginitis or post-surgical healing, but robust randomized controlled trials are lacking. Most of the evidence remains anecdotal or extrapolated from general skin and mucosal healing research rather than direct studies on vaginal tissues. Calendula is considered safe for topical use in most cases, but more scientific research is needed to establish efficacy for vaginal health specifically. Overall, calendula’s use for this body system is justified primarily by tradition, with moderate evidence from laboratory and animal research supporting its general healing properties.
