Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B9 (folic acid/folate)
For the body system: Uterus
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5
Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid (synthetic form) or folate (natural form), is scientifically validated for supporting the uterus, particularly in relation to reproductive health and pregnancy. Folate is essential for DNA synthesis, cell division, and tissue growth, all of which are critical processes during the early stages of fetal development within the uterus. Numerous large-scale studies have shown that adequate folate intake before and during early pregnancy significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida and anencephaly, in the developing fetus. These defects occur within the first 28 days of conception, a time when many women may not yet realize they are pregnant.
Because of this strong evidence, health authorities, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), recommend that women of childbearing age consume sufficient folic acid to support healthy uterine and fetal development. In fact, folic acid supplementation is one of the few interventions universally endorsed to promote uterine health in the context of pregnancy. While its primary role is in fetal neural development, the mechanism by which it functions—supporting rapid cell growth and differentiation—directly involves the uterine environment. In summary, the use of Vitamin B9 for supporting the uterus is strongly grounded in scientific evidence, especially regarding its role in preventing birth defects and promoting reproductive health.
