Evidence supporting the use of: Relaxin
For the body system: Uterus
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Relaxin is a peptide hormone that plays a critical role in female reproductive physiology, especially during pregnancy. It is produced primarily by the corpus luteum and, later in pregnancy, by the placenta and the decidua. Scientific evidence has established that Relaxin contributes to the remodeling of the uterus and cervix, facilitating the accommodation of the growing fetus and preparing the reproductive tract for parturition. Specifically, Relaxin promotes the softening and increased flexibility of the uterine tissues and pelvic ligaments by altering collagen metabolism and the extracellular matrix. This makes the uterus more adaptable and supports its expansion during gestation. Additionally, Relaxin aids in inhibiting uterine contractions during early pregnancy, thereby helping to maintain pregnancy and prevent premature labor. Clinical studies in humans and animal models have demonstrated Relaxin’s effects on uterine quiescence, cervical ripening, and vascularization of the uterine lining. While synthetic or recombinant Relaxin has not been widely adopted as a therapeutic agent in obstetrics due to mixed results and the availability of other interventions, its physiological role in supporting the uterus is well-documented in scientific literature. Thus, the use of Relaxin to support the uterus is justified by a strong scientific foundation, although its direct clinical application remains limited.
