Source of validity: Traditional

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including Western herbalism and some Native American practices, to support women’s reproductive health and the uterus. Historically, red clover preparations such as teas or tinctures have been used to alleviate symptoms associated with menstruation and menopause, including hot flashes and menstrual discomfort. The traditional rationale is largely based on red clover’s content of phytoestrogens—plant-derived compounds that can weakly mimic estrogen in the body, which was thought to support hormonal balance and uterine function.

However, scientific evidence specifically validating red clover’s direct benefits for uterine health is limited. Most modern clinical studies have focused on its effects on menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, with mixed results, and not directly on uterine health or diseases. There is insufficient robust clinical data to confirm its efficacy for supporting the uterus, preventing uterine disorders, or addressing specific gynecological conditions. Therefore, while the use of red clover for uterine support is justified by tradition, its scientific support for this particular use remains modest.
