Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these traditions, it is sometimes recommended for women's health, including for supporting uterine function and recovery after childbirth. However, the primary uses of gotu kola have been for wound healing, improving circulation, and cognitive support rather than direct uterine effects.

There is very limited historical documentation specifically linking gotu kola to uterine health; it may have been included in formulas to promote general reproductive wellness or to aid in postpartum recovery due to its purported tissue-healing and anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific studies directly investigating gotu kola's effects on the uterus or uterine conditions are lacking. Most research has focused on skin healing, venous insufficiency, and neuroprotection.

Therefore, the justification for using gotu kola to support the uterus is primarily traditional and indirect, with very little targeted evidence. The strength of evidence for this specific use is rated low, mainly due to the absence of clinical studies or robust historical usage specifically for uterine health.
