Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

European peony (Paeonia officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional European and Asian herbal medicine, particularly for supporting women’s reproductive health and the uterus. Historical texts and folk remedies have documented the use of peony root for menstrual discomfort, irregular cycles, and to “strengthen the womb.” This use is paralleled in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where white peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is a key ingredient in formulas for gynecological issues.

However, scientific evidence supporting peony’s effectiveness for uterine health is limited. Most clinical research focuses on Paeonia lactiflora (Chinese peony), often in combination with other herbs, not specifically European peony. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest peony root extracts may have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and hormone-modulating effects, which could theoretically influence uterine function or menstrual health. Nevertheless, robust human trials validating these effects for European peony are lacking.

In summary, the use of European peony to support the uterus is primarily justified by tradition and historical usage. While there are plausible mechanisms and some related scientific findings, direct scientific validation for its benefits to the uterus is minimal at this time.
