Evidence supporting the use of: European Pennyroyal
For the body system: Uterus
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
European Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) has a long history of traditional use in supporting the uterus and female reproductive system, particularly as an emmenagogue (an agent thought to stimulate menstrual flow). In folk medicine, pennyroyal was used to address menstrual irregularities, relieve cramps, and, controversially, to induce abortion. The herb contains compounds such as pulegone, which is believed to be responsible for its physiological effects.
However, the evidence supporting these uses is almost entirely anecdotal or based on traditional practices rather than scientific validation. There are very few, if any, rigorous clinical studies that confirm pennyroyal’s efficacy or safety for supporting uterine health. Additionally, pennyroyal, especially in the form of concentrated oil, is known to be highly toxic and can cause severe liver and kidney damage, seizures, and even death. Due to these serious safety concerns, its use is not recommended in modern herbal practice, and it is considered unsafe for ingestion.
In summary, European Pennyroyal’s reputation as an herb for uterine support is grounded in traditional use rather than scientific evidence. The significant risks associated with its use further outweigh any potential benefits, and it is generally advised against for this purpose today.
