Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dioscorea hondurensis is a species of wild yam native to Central America. Its use in supporting the uterus and female reproductive health is primarily rooted in traditional medicine. In various cultures, particularly in Central and South America, related Dioscorea species (such as Dioscorea villosa, or wild yam) have been used as remedies for menstrual discomfort, menopausal symptoms, and as general uterine tonics. These uses are largely based on ethnobotanical knowledge and the historical application of Dioscorea tubers, which contain steroidal saponins like diosgenin. Diosgenin has been used industrially as a precursor for the synthesis of steroid hormones, including progesterone, which is involved in reproductive health.

However, direct clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of Dioscorea hondurensis (specifically) for uterine health is lacking. While the tradition exists, most available scientific research focuses on other Dioscorea species, and there is limited to no published data confirming that the ingestion of Dioscorea hondurensis or its extracts has a measurable benefit on the uterus in humans. As such, its use for this purpose is justified by traditional practices rather than modern scientific validation.
