Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese mugwort (Artemisia argyi) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), particularly for supporting women’s reproductive and uterine health. It is commonly used in moxibustion, a technique where dried mugwort is burned near specific acupuncture points, often to warm the uterus, regulate menstruation, and alleviate menstrual pain. Classical TCM texts describe mugwort as having the ability to dispel cold, stop bleeding, and move qi and blood, which are believed to be important for uterine health. Traditional herbal formulas containing mugwort are prescribed for conditions such as irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and threatened miscarriage.

However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that mugwort may have anti-inflammatory or antispasmodic effects, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most of the evidence supporting mugwort’s effect on the uterus is anecdotal or based on historical records. As a result, while its use is deeply rooted in tradition and widely practiced in East Asia, its efficacy from a biomedical perspective is not well established. More rigorous scientific research is needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness for supporting the uterine system.
