Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Abutua (Cissampelos pareira) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in South America and parts of Africa and Asia. In folk medicine, Abutua is often employed to address a range of gynecological issues, including menstrual disorders, uterine cramps, and as an aid during childbirth. Traditional healers have used decoctions or infusions of its roots and leaves for their purported emmenagogue and antispasmodic properties, which are believed to support the uterus by alleviating menstrual pain and regulating cycles.

However, while its use is well established in traditional practices, there is limited scientific research directly validating these specific effects on the uterus. Some preliminary pharmacological studies have identified the presence of alkaloids and other bioactive compounds in Cissampelos pareira, which may have muscle relaxant or anti-inflammatory properties, but robust clinical evidence is lacking. Most available information cites ethnobotanical or anecdotal reports rather than controlled trials or systematic reviews. Thus, while there is a clear traditional rationale for using Abutua to support the uterus, high-quality scientific validation remains insufficient at this time.
