Evidence supporting the use of: Pelargonium (unspecified)
For the health condition: Urinary Tract Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Pelargonium species, particularly Pelargonium sidoides, have a history of traditional use in South African herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, most notably respiratory infections. Some ethnobotanical records mention the use of Pelargonium for genitourinary issues, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), but such use is neither widespread nor particularly well-documented compared to its applications for coughs and bronchitis. There is little to no high-quality scientific research specifically validating Pelargonium (any species) for the treatment or prevention of UTIs. Most of the clinical interest and studies have focused on respiratory tract infections, where some modest benefit has been observed. For UTIs, use appears to be based on traditional herbal practices and anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical trials or pharmacological evidence. The plant contains compounds with some antibacterial properties in vitro, but their relevance to urinary tract pathogens in humans is not established. Therefore, while there is a weak traditional precedent for using Pelargonium in this context, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence base is very limited.
