Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Lactobacillus jensenii is a species of probiotic bacteria naturally found in the healthy female urogenital tract. Scientific interest in using L. jensenii to support or treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) stems from its role in maintaining vaginal and urinary tract health. Several studies have shown that women with recurrent UTIs often have depleted populations of lactobacilli, including L. jensenii. This bacterium produces lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, which help lower vaginal pH and inhibit the growth of uropathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli.

Research on probiotic supplementation with L. jensenii specifically is still emerging. Some clinical studies have evaluated multi-strain probiotic formulations containing L. jensenii, suggesting a potential reduction in UTI recurrence, especially when administered intravaginally. For example, a pilot study published in "Clinical Infectious Diseases" (2008) demonstrated that vaginal administration of L. crispatus (a close relative of L. jensenii) reduced UTI recurrence. Further laboratory studies have shown that L. jensenii can block pathogen adhesion and outcompete harmful bacteria.

However, while the mechanism is plausible and early findings are promising, large-scale randomized controlled trials focusing exclusively on L. jensenii are limited. Most available evidence involves combinations of lactobacilli or closely related strains. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some supporting evidence, more research is needed to fully establish the efficacy of L. jensenii for UTI prevention or treatment.
