Silverweed (Potentilla anserina), also known as common silverweed or cinquefoil, has a long-standing history in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe. It has been used primarily for its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties. Historical herbal texts and ethnobotanical records indicate that silverweed was employed as a remedy for a range of ailments, including digestive disturbances and excessive menstrual bleeding, but also for urinary complaints such as mild cystitis and to promote urination.

The traditional use of silverweed to support the urinary system is based largely on its mild diuretic effects. Folk medicine practitioners would use infusions or decoctions of the aerial parts or roots to help "cleanse" the urinary tract or relieve symptoms associated with urinary tract discomfort.
