Borassus aethiopum, commonly known as the African fan palm, has a history of use in traditional African medicine for a variety of ailments, including those affecting the urinary system. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional healers in West and Central Africa have reported the use of different parts of the plant—especially the roots and fruit—for managing urinary tract issues such as infections and inflammation. Some preparations are administered to alleviate symptoms like dysuria (painful urination) and promote diuresis (increased urine flow), which are believed to cleanse the urinary tract.

Despite this traditional use, scientific validation is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have indicated potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in extracts of Borassus aethiopum, but these are preliminary and not directly linked to urinary tract health in humans. No high-quality clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have been published to confirm efficacy or safety for urinary system support. Therefore, the evidence supporting this use is primarily traditional, with a low level of scientific corroboration.
