Pterostilbene is a natural compound structurally related to resveratrol and is found in blueberries and certain tree barks. It has garnered scientific interest for its potential lipid-lowering properties, including effects on triglyceride levels. The evidence supporting pterostilbene’s use for elevated triglycerides comes primarily from animal studies and a limited number of human clinical trials. In several rodent models, pterostilbene supplementation has been shown to decrease serum triglyceride concentrations, likely through modulation of lipid metabolism pathways, such as activating PPAR-α and influencing hepatic lipid synthesis.
A small randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2012 (Riche et al., 2012) assessed the effects of pterostilbene in hyperlipidemic adults. The study found a modest but statistically significant decrease in triglyceride levels in subjects receiving pterostilbene compared to placebo. However, the trial was limited by its small sample size (80 participants), short duration (6-8 weeks), and the fact that some lipid parameters worsened in certain subgroups. Other human data are sparse and inconsistent.
Overall, while there is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting pterostilbene may reduce triglycerides, the quality and quantity of human research are limited. Current data do not warrant strong clinical recommendations, and more rigorous, larger-scale studies are needed to determine efficacy and safety. Thus, the evidence is best rated as low to moderate (2/5).
